Harkonnen Blade / Glossu Rabban’s Short Sword Replica from the movie Dune

Introduction:

Frank Herbert’s Dune saga is one of the most important basic blocks of the genre that we know today as science fiction. One of its main locations; Arrakis has influenced many artists, including George Lucas who created Tatooine by the inspiration of the desert planet. Without a doubt the 1984 movie was a great technical achievement, however in our personal opinion, Denis Villeneuve’s approach in 2021 was the most captivating.

The visuals that are minimalistic and grandiose at the same time. Each item fits perfectly to its surrounding while reflects a real function. The close combat weapons are no exceptions. The Harkonnens have the most brutal appearance and their short sword captures this well. It has an unusual, robust shape that was born to cause destruction among those who stand against the will of the baron.

Materials and parts:

The material of the blade is a high-grade magnesium alloy. As the very first step of the manufacturing, the shape of the sword was precision CNC milled from a single block of metal. Right after the engraving process followed to cut the Harkonnen house symbol. Since a simple paint job would not have met our expectations, to provide an ultra-fine, matte surface we used the combination of two methods: sand blasting and eloxation. The final step at the metal works was the CNC mill of the edges.

The handle itself was precision 3D printed and covered with a PU leather strip, just as like the original movie prop. Due to the thoroughness and the time invested, the blade has received an unmatch finish thats worthy for the grand scale of the universe called: Dune.

The sword itself is a 1:1, true to size replica of the original one.
